Born and based in Guatemala City, Muxxi’s unusual characters and creatures have given her a cult following around the world. She created Kouki for us and we fell in love...
What's your favourite thing about living in Guatemala City?
I love the food, the weather, the people, customs and traditions and to live near Antigua Guatemala, my favorite place in the whole world.
In the kitchen, what's your signature dish?
I love soups, especially Japanese.
What are you listening to in your studio at the moment?
Made Up Lovesong #43 by Guillemots
Your work often features multicoloured, kaleidoscopic landscapes and worlds. Is there a real place which has influenced your work?
I had a lot of influences from patterns, nature and colors from my country, I love the stained glass windows in churches, the amazing and beautiful kites that people fly in the windy season, I love the symmetry that you can find in all that; that's what makes me feel inspired to create that kind of worlds.
What would be your key piece of advice for someone hoping to have a career in design?
You have to work hard. "No pain, no gain" and need to have passion for your work, try different things, don't be afraid to fail and most important, never give up!
Do you feel that your Momiji doll has any of your own spirit or character traits?
Maybe, I think that she is sweeter than me :)
What’s next for Muxxi?
Commissions, exhibitions, collaborative projects, I have a long schedule, which is good, I like to be focused on my work because I have the opportunity to live doing what I love the most.
And finally. Friday nights or Sunday mornings?
Friday nights and Margaritas :)
